How to reset Two Factor Authentication
If you've lost access to your 2FA device — whether you changed phones, lost a Yubikey, or can no longer access your authenticator app — you can reset your 2FA through BitGo's self-serve flow
Supported 2FA Methods
BitGo supports the following 2FA methods:
Time-based authentication (Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, DUO)
Web Authentication (WebAuthn / passkey)
Biometric USB key (Yubico USB dongle)
Self-Serve 2FA Reset
Step 1: Initiate the Reset
Go to the BitGo login page and enter your email and password.
On the Two-Factor Authentication screen, click Reset 2FA.
Step 2: IP Cooling-Off Check
If you've had a new IP address verified on your account in the last 24 hours, you'll be placed into a 24-hour cooling-off period before you can proceed. This is a security measure to prevent unauthorized resets.
Step 3: Identity Verification (Persona Selfie Check)
If no IP cooldown applies, you'll be asked to verify your identity through Persona:
Upload a government-issued ID — Persona will verify it's legitimate and match the name against your BitGo account.
Complete a selfie check — You'll be asked to look left and right while Persona verifies liveness and matches your face to your ID.
Step 4: Additional Verification (Based on Account Balance)
After passing the identity check, BitGo performs a balance check across all hot wallets and trading accounts where you are at minimum a spender. The next step depends on your balance:
Account Balance | What Happens Next |
|---|---|
$0 | You'll be guided to set up a new 2FA immediately. |
$1 – $9,999 | You'll need to provide a recovery code or keycard verification (see below). |
$10,000+ | You must contact BitGo Support and complete a video ID verification. |
Recovery Codes
Recovery codes can be downloaded from your Account Settings page.
You receive 10 recovery codes in total, each 12 digits long and alphanumeric.
Each code is one-time use — once used, it cannot be reused.
Keycard Verification
If you haven't downloaded recovery codes, you can verify using your BitGo KeyCard:
Enter a wallet address for the wallet you want to authenticate with.
Enter the last 8 digits of Box C (your BitGo Public Key) from your KeyCard.
If you have neither recovery codes nor your KeyCard, you'll need to contact support for a video ID verification.
Step 5: Set Up New 2FA
Once verified, you'll be prompted to set up a new 2FA method. Your old 2FA remains active until you successfully complete the reset flow — so if you find your device in the meantime, you can still log in normally.
Note: A 2FA reset request expires after 24 hours. If you pass the selfie check but don't complete the reset, you can resume where you left off within that window.
Contacting Support
If you're unable to complete the self-serve flow, or if your balance exceeds $10,000, contact support@bitgo.com to request assistance.
